Vaman Karma in Spring: A Blessing for the Body
Vasantik Vaman (Ideal Time: February 18 to March 20, 2026)
Looking at the body's condition during the current Spring (Vasant) season, there is a natural aggravation of Kapha Dosha.
Changes in Body Doshas During Spring:
During this season, the sun's rays become stronger, signaling the beginning of warmth in the environment. Just as frozen ice melts in a warm climate, the Kapha accumulated in the body during winter begins to liquefy due to the heat of Spring.
As a result, many people experience a Kapha imbalance leading to symptoms such as colds, coughs, indigestion, nausea, and acidity.
The Result: This liquefied Kapha weakens the Jatharagni (digestive fire/appetite).
Symptoms: This leads to issues like lethargy, colds, coughs, a feeling of heaviness, and loss of appetite.
2. Ayurvedic Purification and Remedies
To pacify this aggravated Kapha, Ayurveda suggests two types of treatments: 'Shodhan' (Purification) and 'Shaman' (Pacification).
- Panchakarma Support: In this season, Vaman (therapeutic emesis to expel Kapha) and Nasya (administering herbal drops through the nose) are considered excellent.
- Exercise and Udvartan: To shake off lethargy, exercise is essential. 'Udvartan'—massaging the body with dry powders like barley flour or Triphala—helps reduce fat and Kapha.
- Lepa (Herbal Paste): To eliminate body odor and provide a cooling effect, a mixture of sandalwood, agar, saffron, and camphor can be applied.
3. Aahar-Vihar: What to Eat and What to Avoid?
Since the digestive fire is weak during Vasant, it is advisable to eat light food.
| What to Eat (Pathya) | What NOT to Eat/Do (Apathya) |
|---|---|
| Old barley, wheat, and moong dal | New harvest, refined flour (maida), or heavy food |
| Honey (The best medicine for Kapha) | Curd, sweets, and ice cream |
| Bitter and pungent vegetables (Bitter gourd, Drumstick) | Sweets and fried food |
| Water boiled with dry ginger or Nagarmotha | Excessive cold or oily/viscous food |
| Waking up before sunrise | Sleeping during the day (Diva-svapna) |
4. Vihar: Enjoying Nature
Spring is the season of the senses. According to Ayurveda, afternoons should be spent in places with:
- Natural Surroundings: Dense trees and the fragrance of colorful flowers.
- Peace: The sound of a cuckoo’s chirp and flowing water.
- Malayanil: The cool southern breeze (Malaya wind) that keeps the mind refreshed.
5. Special Note: Avoid Salty and Sour Tastes
Sweet, sour, and salty tastes increase Kapha. While salt (Lavan) helps in liquefying Kapha and is not as harmful as sweets, its excess should still be avoided. In this season, Bitter (Tikta) and Pungent (Katu) tastes are best for pacifying Kapha.
Conclusion:
If we maintain discipline in our diet and lifestyle during Vasant Ritu, we can remain disease-free throughout the year. Even the tradition of bathing with Kesudo (Flame of the Forest) water during Holi is a natural way to eliminate skin diseases and Kapha.
